When it came time to plan Smith’s first birthday party, I started brainstorming when and where and theme.  It felt like the pressure was on.  A first birthday seems so special and therefore so daunting at first thought, but after attending another first party of a friend, I decided the most fun parties are the ones that are simple and sweet.  There are so many fun options for kid themed parties, but ultimately, my husband and I decided a Winter One-derland backyard bash with our family and close friends with good food and drinks was perfect for us.  I thought a Winter One-derland theme was very fitting for December and we could decorate simply with Christmas decor we already had (lights, garland, etc), lots of snowflakes and balloons and baby blue.  My mom was amazing enough to make white chili to keep everyone warm, plus the delish pasta salad; my mother in law made little sandwiches and then we had some great other snacks and sweet treats.  I ended up going simple with the cake and just getting a little “smash” cake for Smith and a bigger version from my favorite LA cake shop for everyone else.

The most important thing about the day way spending time with the people that had helped us and supported us throughout the last year.  The saying ‘it takes a village’ is more true than you can imagine before you are a parent.  From the other moms that gave me advice or were there to commiserate, to the baby dates that kept Smith and I company, to the many family members that helped us care for Smith – it was such a sweet day.  We had family come in from out of town and got to spend the whole weekend together as a big family.  It couldn’t have turned out more perfect!  And even though hosting parties usually stresses me out, this one was totally manageable and relaxed.  Hope you guys enjoyed the fun party pics.  See below for details on decor and cake and let me know if you have a question about something I didn’t include here.  Thanks for stopping by!
