TRY ME TUESDAY: BOLD LIPS

before-lips

(Before color)

Do you ever have issues finding a bright bold lip color that works for you?  I am always hesitant to invest in something new and different from what I am used to because if I don’t like the shade then it’s a big waste and lipsticks generally are not the type of thing you can share!  This Tuesday I went out to try some fun new shades for fall.  Deep reds and purples are very on trend so that’s what I went on the hunt for…

Another big trend for fall is matte instead of shine.  I tried on four matte shades at the NARS flagship store on Melrose and I actually ended up liking them all!  A couple of things to keep in mind when shopping for your fun new color: think about what clothing colors you wear and then try to choose a lip shade you think would go with most of your stuff.  When you head to a beauty counter, don’t be afraid to ask for help!  Usually the sales girls have tried or own most of the shades and can help guide you.  Often times the shade is very different on you vs. how it looks in the stick.

I would plan to shop with good coverage foundation on in order to have even skin tone and in my case cover the redness, and if you need some help have the makeup counter assistant apply some for you.  (I generally am not a huge red or pink fan because I don’t like how they often draw out the red in my cheeks and chin, so I was hoping purple would be my go-to.)  Another tip is to try on the lightest shade you are interested in first so it doesn’t affect the other colors to follow and when taking off each color sweep in so that you are not wiping the color onto your face.  My biggest piece of advice is once you find a color you like, wear it outside and then decide!  Lighting in the stores can majorly change the way you look!

At home tips: use concealer around your lips and nose to take away the red and line your lips with the same shade or a shade darker than your lip color to give it a polished look.  Also, bold lips might not be in your comfort zone if you’re like me, so feel free to think about doing it when your outfit is neutral and when you want to leave your eye makeup simple (I stick with a gold or light gray shadows and black liquid liner on the top lid only) and then add a little bronzer to give your cheeks some color – your lips will do all the talking for your night out!

Make an appointment with Phuong Tran if you are in LA – she is at NARS on Melrose and is the best!
